Layers = Schichten (engl.)
Hauchdünne, ohne Absetzen gezogene Tuschstift-Linien, werden mit Hilfe eines Lineals auf quadratische oder rechteckige Alu-Dibond-Platten fein säuberlich von der Künstlerin gezogen. In Blöcken längsförmig oder quer angeordnet, durchbrechen sie andere Einheiten und bilden auf der Platte ein Konglomerat an Farben und konstruierten Formen. Die räumliche Wahrnehmung des Betrachters wird ob der Farben- und Formenvielfalt herausgefordert und jeder Blick darauf enthüllt eine neue, soeben entdeckte Dimension.
Wafer-thin ink lines, drawn without settling, are neatly drawn by the artist with the help of a ruler on square or rectangular aluminium dibond panels. Arranged in blocks lengthwise or crosswise, they break through other units and form a conglomerate of colours and constructed forms on the panel. The spatial perception of the viewer is challenged by the diversity of colours and shapes, and every glance at it reveals a new, just-discovered dimension.
Es ist eine bewusste Entscheidung von Doris Marten ihre Blöcke nach Abstufungen in der Helligkeit der Farbtöne bzw. dem Einsatz der Farben als Kontraste nebeneinander zu generieren und sich auf nur 7 Kolorierungen innerhalb einer Arbeit zu fokussieren. Mit der Konzentration auf diese ausschließlich gewählten Nuancen schließt sie aber jede Beliebigkeit aus und bleibt in ihrer Variation flexibel.
It is a conscious decision by Doris Marten to generate her blocks according to gradations in the brightness of the colour tones or the use of the colours as contrasts next to each other and to focus on only 7 colourings within one work. By concentrating on these exclusively chosen nuances, however, she excludes any arbitrariness and remains flexible in her variation.
Nicht nur auf einer Grundplatte werden diese Farbblöcke gezogen, sondern Doris Marten entwickelte auch die sogenannten „Layers Objects“, die jeweils auf einer eigenen Alu-Dibond-Fläche einen dieser Farbblöcke darstellen und zu einem großen Ganzen montiert werden. Da diese Objekte auch in ihrer Struktur nicht mehr nur auf Länge und Breite fixiert sind, sondern in ihrer Form nach allen Richtungen wachsen, wird die Relation zur Wand bzw. überhaupt zum Raum noch weiter erweitert. Sie scheinen entlang der tragenden Fläche sich zu entwickeln und in jede Achse zu drängen, sodass die Arbeit nicht nur ein ästhetischer Anblick, sondern auch ein verlebendigtes Farb- und Formspiel wird.
Not only are these colour blocks drawn on a base plate, but Doris Marten also developed the so-called „Layers Objects“, each of which represents one of these colour blocks on its own aluminium dibond surface and is assembled into a large whole. Since these objects are also no longer fixed in their structure in terms of length and width, but grow in their form in all directions, the relation to the wall, or to the room in general, is extended even further. They seem to develop along the supporting surface and push into every axis, so that the work becomes not only an aesthetic sight but also an animated play of colour and form.
Trotz ihres Fokus auf die Elemente der Linie und der Farben und damit einen Minimalismus des Ausdrucks schafft Doris Marten immer wieder in ihren Werkserien wie Grids, Light ’n‘ Lines, Sound and Vision oder Borderlines neue Eindrücke im Raum und auch auf den Betrachter zu entwickeln. Die immer wieder veränderlichen Eindrücke der Sinne des Beobachters variieren von Raum- und Farbeindrücken und einen immer wieder überraschenden Blick bei jeder neuerlichen Sicht darauf.
Despite her focus on the elements of line and colour and thus a minimalism of expression, Doris Marten always manages to develop new impressions in space and also on the viewer in her work series such as „Grids“, „Light ’n‘ Lines“, „Sound and Vision“ or „Borderlines“. The ever-changing impressions of the observer’s senses vary from impressions of space and colour and an ever-surprising view with each new view of it.
